Mean Black Mamba: Raw foot stomping roots music that grooves your body and soul. Words of humor and hope sliding between writhing riffs and the insistent thump of a cowhide drum. Born on the southern tip of Africa, Guy Collins has been playing guitar for most of his years. His interest really took off when he was 15 on a warm day. The long distance groove from somewhere in the American south, Howlin’ Wolf on Highway 49, beamed into the living room. African roots, blues, rock ‘n roll. A continual search for an elusive sound.

James van Minnen and Guy Collins have both been in the music scene for years, mostly somewhat under the radar, fuelling the backline in some of the more well-known outfits around.
Mean Black Mamba is the result of infrequent collaborations between these two musicians over the past decade, an unnamed two-piece appearing at house parties, street markets and other events where they have slipped in incognito and blown people away with their rich, gritty and rootsy sound.

The Table Mountain Blues Summit 2013 is set to give you a musical thrill that’s gonna groove your mojo soul! SA’s premier Blues Festival has found a new home at the Hillcrest Quarry in Durbanville and on 22 and 23 November, the Cream of South Africa’s Blues- Rock Artists will be taking the stage.
To celebrate and trace the roots of Blues in South Africa, we will be running a competition in October: THE HISTORY OF BLUES IN SA COMPETITION: Mail your factual finds about the roots/history of Blues in SA, as well as any other fascinating tales about the development of Blues in SA to: richardpryor@telkomsa.net and cc liny@mweb.co.za – the most interesting find will win R1 000.00. History of The Blues Summit:
Mike Combrinck started the Blues Summit on the 15th November 2006 at the Tafelberg Tavern in Cape Town. This debut of the festival saw the reunion of the Blues Broers for a special summit performance, and with the help of Boulevard Blues, Albert Frost, Dan Patlansky, Delta Blue, Piet Botha and Southern Gypsey Queen, it was a great success.
In 2007 Mike entered into negotiation with long time bastion of Blues Rock, Richard Pryor to co-partner him in managing the Blues Summit. Richard ‘a solid man of Rock’ had an axe to grind and was sharpening his blues pencil to take the summit up a notch.His mandate was a musically successful summit with financial independence.
Tapping into his own musical resources, database and Blues Wigi Boards, Richard secured the sponsorship of Combustion Technology to help out financially.
Combustion Technology is a Company focused on Energy Efficiency.
Their core business is to concentrate on the supply of the most Modern Energy Efficient Equipment Solutions to the Steam, Hot water and Heating Industry.

Jake Gunn is an up and coming blues rock musician hailing from the northern suburbs of Cape Town. After discovering rock ‘n roll at a young age, he was inspired to start playing guitar and worked tirelessly to improve his skill, which finally led to him joining the Lyzyrd Kyngs (Piet Botha & Akkedis) in 2010. He spent a year under the mentorship of these veteran musicians, before teaming up with the talented young guitarist Devin Smith.
Sharing a love of music and complementing each other’s guitar playing, they started doing gigs around Cape Town, followed by a tour up the coast. They later evolved into a full electric band after being joined by CJ Bergh and Allen Smith. Jake Gunn’s first album Triple Jack, recorded in the winter of 2012, is now available and includes the song “Radio Mojo” which was featured in the Rolling Stone Rock Chart of 19 January 2013.

The annual Ard Matthews and Friends Charity Concert will be taking place for the fourth year running on Thursday 29th of August 2013. The concert will be taking place at the DoubleTree by Hilton – Cape Town Upper Eastside in Woodstock. The popular South African singer, Ard Matthews who is also lead singer of the acclaimed band Just Jinjer, has been at the forefront of this concert for the past 3 years along with the assistance of top events and PR company, The Little Black Book. The annual charity concert brings together great South African talent to raise money for a worthy cause.
Funds raised through ticket sales will go to a trust called “We The Good People”, a charitable cause, founded by Ard along with two other trustees, Alistair Hargreaves (Springbok/Sharks Lock) and Sean Temple (owner of Flux Motion Kettle Bell Gym). The simple rule of this organization is – trust – and they hope to gain the trust of the public when it comes to the appropriation of charitable efforts. The charity aims to educate the public about the importance of giving back to others no matter how busy they get, and to allow 100% transparency when it comes to the distribution of the funds. It will also be facilitated by one of the world’s top law firms, Norton Rose, as part of their pro-bono social investment. www.wethegoodpeople.org

Footage from this documentary features strongly in the Oscar winning film, Searching For Sugar Man.
Directed by Tonia Selley, Dead Men Don’t Tour, was first broadcast on SABC 3 at 9.30pm on the 5th July 2001 just after ‘Ripley’s Believe Or Not’.
This film features wonderful concert footage, backstage antics, interviews with Craig Bartholomew Strydom and Stephen “Sugar” Segerman, Rodriguez and his family, the promoters, the fans and the musicians.
All live footage was filmed at the concerts in Pretoria, Durban and the Blues Room in Johannesburg.
The soundtrack for the documentary is based on the Live Fact CD with video collages from the various performances. The concert footage is linked with interviews, backstage antics, rehearsals, etc.

Give Me The Good News – Crocodile Harris
With the help of Tully McCully, Crocodile Harris constructed ‘Give Me The Good News’ around a beautiful piano lullaby tune. Some lush orchestral sounds are added while Crocodile’s emotive vocals build into the crescendo of the brassy chorus that fairly soars. However, unlike some other anti-war songs, (Dylan’s ‘Masters of War’ for example), this is not an angry song. It is almost like a father telling a child not to grow up going to war. This feeling is perhaps brought on by the lullaby lilt to the piano and, as the song draws to a close, a child-like xylophone accompanies the piano.
Harris, (real name Robin Graham), scored it big with this anti-war song. Not only did the song spent 8 weeks on the Springbok Top 20 , peaking at number 14 in 1982, but also went on to shift 650 000 units in France. Who says good news doesn’t sell?
