It’s been called “The Greatest Music Story of the past 50 years”, the tale of this wonderful and talented musician and his journey to his well-deserved and long-overdue fame. But enough about James Stewart”!
In this innovative, informative and slightly irreverent show, James joins Stephen “Sugar” Segerman, the man behind the rediscovery of Sixto Rodriguez and “Searching For Sugar Man”, the Oscar-winning documentary about the whole story, as these two old “choms” share their respective stories and play and sing some great Rodriguez and South African classic songs.
For 20 years, Sugar, as he is popularly known, has been involved in the rediscovery of, and resurgence of worldwide interest in, Sixto Rodriguez. This legendary and internationally acclaimed American folk-rock singer-songwriter, who was a huge success in South Africa from the ‘70’s onwards, was believed to be dead but was found alive and well and living in Detroit in 1997. Since then his career has gone from strength to strength following a series of international tours, the re-release of his albums, and the success of the Oscar-winning film in 2013.
Since then, Sugar has travelled around South Africa, and overseas, giving talks and answering questions about the whole Rodriguez story. He attended the Academy Awards ceremony in 2013, followed by the publishing of his best-selling book in 2015, titled “Sugar Man – The Birth, Death and Resurrection of Sixto Rodriguez”, co-written with his fellow “Musical Detective” in the story, Craig Bartholomew Strydom. For the past 15 years he has also been the owner of Mabu Vinyl, the Cape Town record shop featured in the Rodriguez film.
James Stewart, the Multi SAMA award-winning, EMMY-nominated, chart-topping, singer-songwriter, cut his teeth in classical music with the usual childhood distaste, and then “surfed passionately and messed around with synthesizers” in his early teens. The following decade would see him form his own band, abandon a law career and take a leap into the great unknown. As singer-songwriter for The Usual, he achieved fame with enduring classics like ‘The Shape That I’m In’ and ‘Like A Vision’. Since then ‘Shine’, ‘A Man Like Me’, and many other solo hits, have found their way into hearts and homes across South Africa.
Hear James tell his side of the story and play a selection of songs by himself, Rodriguez and other South African artists.

Gauteng’s premier music festival The Otterlake Easter festival is back and bigger than ever this coming Easter!
Enjoy 3 days of live music, performed by South-Africa’s top artists, in the serene bush-veld surroundings of Kameelfontein, north east of Roodeplaat Dam, less than 40kms from Pretoria’s center. Come and swim in our lake or pool, fish, camp, laugh and experience the magic for the long-weekend! Sipho Hotstix Mabuse to celebrate Burnout with his show “Timelessness 50 years on” Wed 1 Oct Lyric Theatre

On Wednesday evening, 1 October, for one-night-only, one of South Africa’s, and indeed the world’s, most admired and respected musicians – Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse – is set to perform at The Lyric Theatre, Johannesburg, in a special, single performance, affair.
Titled Timelessness, a name coined by Mabuse, the show will tip its hat to the masters, taking fans on musical journey filled with extraordinary, one-of-a-kind, performances.
2014 is a momentous year in Mabuse’s 50-year career immersion in music. Not only is it his golden anniversary of his unwavering commitment and contribution to South African music, it is 30 years ago his now 500 000 copy-selling single “Burn Out” changed the face of shape of Afro-pop and township jive like no other song or artist in pop music history.
From his first group, Harari, through to his stellar solo career that spans the better part of his adult life, Mabuse’s Lyric Theatre reveal is going to be jam-packed with so many hits and memories, beyond “Burn Out”, that “we might not be able to fit it in,” he jokes.
Beyond competent and hugely applauded, the magic this musician makes is practically impossible to pigeonhole. Drummer, flautist, alto flautist, pianist, saxophonist, kalimba player, timbale and African drummer, Mabuse’s raw ability and talent know no limit!
His name became synonymous with township jive nearly three decades ago, and today his live performances still present the master’s art as the stuff of legend.

SA’s biggest fully orchestrated rock musical, Rockville 2069 to premiere at Artscape
South Africa’s biggest, fully orchestrated, technologically sophisticated rock musical production, Rockville 2069, will have its world première with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) at Artscape Opera House in August.
Set at the 100th anniversary of Woodstock, Rockville 2069 is a love story set against the backdrop of a post-apocalyptic world. Featuring a cast of 25 with lead singer Joseph Clark (of Queen at the Opera) and the Kyle Peterson seven-piece rock band with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, it combines artists and musicians from different cultural and musical backgrounds to bring a new, sometimes discordant, always thrilling voice to the rock musical scene.
The lead roles will be played by Joseph Clark (Papa), Vicki Jayne (Mama), Stephan Van Huyssteen (JohnnyReb) and Josie Piers (Danielle). With fast moving scene changes, the use of 3D animation and a 100m2 LED screen, technology plays a key role in creating this believable, constantly shifting production.
Rockville 2069 has been in the making for five years and is the artistic brainchild of composer, Johnny Ray. The end result is an emotionally soaring journey of caution, hope, optimism, rebellion and joy which aims to transform and create music while sending a powerful message of change through a sustainable way of life.
The plot tells of an earth destroyed by man’s neglect and climate change. Only Rockville, a small archipelago of islands, survives and is now home to a group of peace-loving rockers, sound technicians and musicians.
“The addition of the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra is a show-stopping element”, says Johnny Ray, “and we know that all theatre management eyes are on this production which we hope to take from Cape Town to the rest of the world.”

MUSIC EXCHANGE, South Africa’s premier music, film and entertainment conference, returns for the fourth time in 2014. The three-day MUSIC EXCHANGE program opens on Thursday 6 March 2014, and will culminate with a fitting tribute to one of the worlds, and this country’s finest musical exports, Dr Trevor Jones on Sunday 9 March 2014.
Since its inception in 2009, MUSIC EXCHANGE has served as a catalyst between the artistically anchored worlds of entertainment, film, music, academia, and the distinctly gifted men and women who feed, and are fed, from its many disciplines.
Three jam-packed days filled with the most committed and talented people in the entertainment industry today, MUSIC EXCHANGE is passion personified on a multitude of levels. “It’s a family of like-minded and hardworking people,” MUSIC EXCHANGE founder Martin Myers confirms. “Included in that mix are artists, composers, national and international advocates, film producers and public relations and entertainment specialists, Brand and Image Consultants and Music legends the calibre of Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse. The fourth and final day of MUSIC EXCHANGE 2014 promises to be extraordinary thanks to the motivation of music icon Dr Trevor Jones. Dinosaur Days Revisited Benefit For Leon Economides
Cafe Barcelona in Pretoria is the place to be at 7pm on the 16th November 2013 to show support for Leon Economides.
A number of years ago, Leon was held up at gunpoint in an armed robbery in his offices, and was badly assaulted, which led to his spinal column being seriously injured when a few lower vertebra were broken as a result of him being kicked in the back and the assailants jumping on his back when he was made to lie face down on the floor. The damage was quite extensive, and this this has led to many failed back procedures since 2008 (the diagnosis is called “Failed Back Procedure Syndrome”) and other complications, rendering him unable to work properly or live a normal life, together with huge medical bills. This has affected his income tremendously, and has led to other medical conditions that are attributed to the condition.
It is a long and involved story, but to summarize: Due to medical aid and life policy exclusions / waiting periods and other financial issues, Leon’s medical expenses got out of control as the complications, and need, for further, and ongoing medical procedures, continue. He has recently consulted with a new anaesthesiologist / pain specialist at the Wilgeheuwel Hospital who has advised that, whilst there is no cure for the nerve and disc damage done, he might be able to alleviate and reduce the debilitating pain Leon is experiencing every day of his life, with a different procedure to the ones that Leon has already had, and which have not been successful, hopefully thus affording him a better quality of life.
Johnathan Martin came up with the idea of a benefit concert, and he and Charl Barry have set about arranging this. The purpose of the benefit concert is to try and assist Leon with the costs of this latest procedure, which is to be held in the later part of November.
Johnathan and Charl contacted various musicians, secured a venue and a PA, together with a sound engineer. It’s now its up to us, the public, to show up and help pay Leon’s medical bills, a sort of “thank you” for the music and support of SA bands and musicians over the years.
CAFE BARCELONA, in Elardus Park, Pretoria, was kind enough to give us the venue, together with their PA. The concert will be held from 7pm on 16 NOVEMBER 2013, and Conrad Jamneck will do the sound.

James van Minnen and Guy Collins have both been in the music scene for years, mostly somewhat under the radar, fuelling the backline in some of the more well-known outfits around.
Mean Black Mamba is the result of infrequent collaborations between these two musicians over the past decade, an unnamed two-piece appearing at house parties, street markets and other events where they have slipped in incognito and blown people away with their rich, gritty and rootsy sound.

Acclaimed South African guitarist and songwriter, Nibs, made his first profiled performances 25 years ago. From his humble beginnings at the Durban Folk Club to International stages, it has culminated in the newly released, deluxe (2CD) anthology album ‘Crossing Borders, Driving north’. It spans the creative and diverse body of work from his 9 highly acclaimed solo albums. The bonus second disc, ‘Catching Trains’- Nibs solo live through Europe, traces his footsteps through his many tours through France, Germany and the UK. These intimate solo ‘live’ performances were recorded in theatres, music halls, open air festivals and from within the walls of a maximum security prison.
It seems almost poetic justice that “Crossing Borders, Driving north” should translate into “a journey without limitations”, so it is a fitting retribution to the rites of passage of his work to date and for what is still to come.
His virtuosic acoustic guitar style and mesmeric whispering voice have attracted a worldwide following for its intelligent folk, World and African overtones. He has been nominated 7 times at the South African Music awards, perform with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra and share stages across the world with the likes of Ben Harper, Bonnie Rait and Taj Mahal.
Nibs is also busy with the filming of a documentary about himself and his career which will be screened at his upcoming launches in the second half of 2013.

Now in its 8th year with the continued help of main sponsor Combustion Technology and also Paul Bothner Music, The Table Mountain Blues Summit has established itself as a top music festival and is ready to hit awesome and epic status in 2013.
History:
Mike Combrinck started the Blues Summit on the 15th November 2006 at the Tafelberg Tavern in Cape Town. This debut of the festival saw the reunion of the Blues Broers for a special summit performance, and with the help of Boulevard Blues, Albert Frost, Dan Patlansky, Delta Blue, Piet Botha and Southern Gypsey Queen, it was a great success.
In 2007 Mike entered into negotiation with long time bastion of Blues Rock, Richard Pryor to co-partner him in managing the Blues Summit. Richard ‘a solid man of Rock’ had an axe to grind and was sharpening his blues pencil to take the summit up a notch.His mandate was a musically successful summit with financial independence.
Tapping into his own musical resources, database and Blues Wigi Boards, Richard secured the sponsorship of Combustion Technology to help out financially.
Paul Bothner Music joined as a sponsor in 2009 and they have been a mainstay supporter and sponsor ever since. Fender threw some muscle into the event as well by offering a Genuine Fender axe giveaway at every summit.

Jake Gunn is an up and coming blues rock musician hailing from the northern suburbs of Cape Town. After discovering rock ‘n roll at a young age, he was inspired to start playing guitar and worked tirelessly to improve his skill, which finally led to him joining the Lyzyrd Kyngs (Piet Botha & Akkedis) in 2010. He spent a year under the mentorship of these veteran musicians, before teaming up with the talented young guitarist Devin Smith.
Sharing a love of music and complementing each other’s guitar playing, they started doing gigs around Cape Town, followed by a tour up the coast. They later evolved into a full electric band after being joined by CJ Bergh and Allen Smith. Jake Gunn’s first album Triple Jack, recorded in the winter of 2012, is now available and includes the song “Radio Mojo” which was featured in the Rolling Stone Rock Chart of 19 January 2013.
